Reflection, Refraction Artisan Gallery Exhibition

Branding

Context

This was my first real-world studio project during my Liveworm internship, where my identity design was selected for Reflections and Refractions, an exhibition at Artisan Gallery celebrating contemporary Queensland glass artists. The exhibition highlighted local innovation in glassmaking and the growing support for Queensland’s glass community, showcasing both current achievements and future potential.

The Design

Grounded in a semiotic approach, I sought to visually capture the exhibition’s theme by exploring the optical effects of reflection and refraction. Inspired by a featured glass artwork, I designed overlapping ‘R’ letterforms that echo how light interacts with glass, forming a dynamic visual metaphor aligned with the client’s vision. The project strengthened my skills in typography, concept development and client collaboration, reflecting my values of purposeful, accessible and concept-driven design that encourages thoughtful engagement. It also prompted me to consider how I can continue integrating research and theory into future projects to create design that serves both clients and society.

Process

I refined typographic forms through iterations that balanced abstraction and legibility, guided by principles of hierarchy and clarity. Responding to Artisan’s brief, the identity remained simple, adaptable, and effective, mirroring how glass reflects Queensland stories. Client feedback informed refinements, ensuring the design worked seamlessly across applications such as window decals and wall didactics.
